BERLIN - The Bavarian state parliament passed a law yesterday obliging women to state why they want to terminate a pregnancy and forbidding doctors to earn more than 25 per cent of their income from abortions, Denis Staunton reports.

The ruling Christian Social Union withstood opposition from Social Democrats and Greens after a debate lasting more than 100 hours. Two doctors have already warned they will mount a legal challenge to the law.
