As Garda ballistics experts examined three handguns and ammunition discovered in the Crumlin area of Dublin at the weekend, Army bomb disposal experts have blown up second World War shells and an old naval device in three separate incidents in Cork and Kildare.

When a 36mm naval shell was found in the attic of a house in Kinsale, the occupants brought it to the gardai. In Cork city, the bomb disposal squad was called after development work on wasteland uncovered an artillery shell. Both shells were blown up.

In Co Kildare, a member of the Civil Defence uncovered a corroded grenade in the Allen Wood. It was also blown up.
