A Virginia police officer was fatally shot during her first day on the job and two of her fellow officers were wounded when they responded to a domestic disturbance in a Washington DC suburb.

Ashley Guindon ( 28) an officer with the Prince William County Police and a US Marine Corps veteran, died of her wounds after being shot a day after she was sworn in as a member of the force, the department said.

An off-duty US army sergeant stationed at the Pentagon has been charged with the shootings.

The police officer had responded to a domestic disturbance at a home outside Washington, authorities said yesterday. Two other officers, Jesse Hempen and David McKeown, who were also shot, remain hospitalised.

Inside the home, police found a woman shot dead and an 11-year-old, who was unharmed. Prince William County commonwealth attorney Paul Ebert said: “It’s a sad day for everyone in this room. It’s a sad day for law enforcement.” – (Reuters)
