Dean McCarron’s remains to return home on Thursday

Monaghan native and same-sex marriage campaigner died in San Francisco last week

The remains of an Irish man who died in the US last week are due to arrive in Dublin Airport on Thursday, with his funeral set to take place on Saturday morning.

Dean McCarron (23) died in San Francisco last Wednesday. He had been visiting the city for a family wedding.

His mother and father will accompany his coffin back to Ireland on Thursday morning.

His remains will be brought to the family home in Monaghan on Thursday, where he will repose until Saturday morning, before removal for funeral Mass at St Macartan's Cathedral in Monaghan town at 11am.

Tributes paid

News of Mr McCarron’s death prompted an outpouring of emotion from friends and university colleagues on social media, with many paying tribute to his campaigning efforts prior to the same-sex marriage referendum in May last.

He featured briefly in the documentary The Queen of Ireland, which follows drag performer and same-sex marriage activist Rory O’Neill, also known as Panti Bliss.

O'Neill described the Maynooth University student last week as a "smart, funny, charming young man".

Minister of State for Equality Aodhán Ó Ríordáin also expressed his sadness at Mr McCarron’s death on social media over the weekend.
