Gardaí in Co Clare have appealed for witnesses to an early morning single-vehicle crash in which a young man was seriously injured.

The 23-year-old driver, the only occupant of the car, was in a critical condition in a Limerick hospital last night after his car went off the road at about 5.30am.

The crash happened on the main N68 Ennis to Kilrush road. A passing motorist came on the scene but didn’t know if the crash had just happened or the car had been there for a time.

The vehicle is believed to have gone out of control and crashed into a ditch.

The driver, thought to be from nearby Kilmurry McMahon, and from a large family, was trapped in the wreckage.

Units of the fire brigade from Kilrush, along with an ambulance and rapid response paramedic unit from Ennis, attended the incident.

Fire crews assisted paramedics to safely remove the injured man from the wrecked car.

Gardaí closed the road for several hours pending completion of a forensic crash scene investigation and the car was later taken for a more detailed technical examination.

Gardaí from Kilrush are investigating the cause of the crash and have appealed for witnesses to contact them on 065-9080550.
