A jet-ski tragedy on a Co Mayo lake is believed to have claimed the life of a young man yesterday

A jet-ski tragedy on a Co Mayo lake is believed to have claimed the life of a young man yesterday. He had been enjoying himself with fellow jet-ski enthusiasts on Baltra lake, about 10 miles from Castlebar, when his machine capsized. He was named locally last night as Alan Joyce, Ranaghy, Islandeady, Castlebar, one of a family of four, three boys and a girl.

Shocked friends of the 19-year-old who saw the jet-ski overturn around 5pm raised the alarm. A major lake search and rescue operation involving a Coast Guard helicopter, civil defence personnel and gardaí and civilians immediately got under way.

Members of the missing man's family and his friends who had been with him on the lake earlier stayed on the shoreline until after dark as the search continued.

The rescue helicopter called off its search around 7.30pm and divers concentrated their activity on a stretch of deep water near the shoreline in the village of Glenisland.
