GARDAI questioned a teenager in Dublin yesterday in connection with the death of a man who suffered a beating in the city eight days ago.

The 17 year old was arrested in Dublin yesterday morning and detained at Kevin Street Garda station. He was held under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows for detention of up to 12 hours without charge.

He was released yesterday evening and gardai are to prepare a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

On Sunday of last week Mr William Cahill (28) was badly beaten near his home at Basin Street flats in Dublin. Local people said he was beaten and kicked by two men as he lay on the ground.

According to locals, he had been involved in a fight in the area a few days earlier.

Mr Cahill was taken to St James's Hospital after the incident but failed to recover consciousness. He was kept on a life support machine, but showed no sign of recovering from severe head injuries, and was pronounced dead last Thursday morning.
