A Leaving Cert student has been charged with the manslaughter of a garda who died from injuries received when investigating a stolen car.

Jamie McGrenaghan (18) was charged at Glenties District Court in Co Donegal yesterday with the unlawful killing of Garda Robbie McCallion, who died less than two weeks after he was injured on March 26th at Tara Court, Letterkenny.

Mr McGrenaghan, who sat beside his mother in court during the four-minute hearing, was also charged with dangerous driving causing Garda McCallion’s death and with reckless driving, endangering the lives of gardaí Joanne Doherty and Shane Lavelle.

Judge Denis McLoughlin remanded Mr McGrenaghan on continuing bail of €4,000 and adjourned the case to July 2nd at Letterkenny District Court. Sgt Christy Galligan said Mr McGrenaghan was already on remand to July 16th on other charges. A further adjournment will be sought to that date when it is expected the book of evidence will be ready for service.
