The concluding stages have been reached at the Central Criminal Court in the trial of a youth accused of raping a girl in a south Dublin wooded area where teenagers met to drink.

Ms Miriam Reynolds SC (with Ms Una McGurk), for the prosecution, and Mr Patrick Gageby SC (with Ms Marie Torrens), for the defence, made closing addresses on the third day of the trial. The jury will retire later today. The now 19-year-old youth has pleaded not guilty to raping and sexually assaulting the girl on October 17th, 1997 beside St Raphaela's Convent, Upper Kilmacud Road, Stillorgan.

Earlier, Dr Mary McCaffrey, of the Rotunda Hospital sexual assaults unit, said she concluded that some marks on the girl's vaginal area were consistent with her claim of non-consensual penetration.

She agreed with Mr Gageby that the girl had not revealed that a youth she had earlier performed oral sex with also penetrated her vagina with two fingers.
