Lusaka - A former Zambian army officer, condemned to death for his role in a botched 1997 coup, has been castrated in prison, Zambian newspapers reported yesterday.

Quoting testimony from University Teaching Hospital urologist Dr Francis Manda, the newspapers said Capt Jack Chiti was castrated after suffering from an unnamed ailment. Chiti has denied this, claiming he was the victim of torture. Dr Manda was giving evidence to Zambia's Torture Commission.
