Zimbabwe inflation reaches over 220.9 %

Zimbabwe's inflation has reached 220

Zimbabwe's inflation has reached 220.9 per cent, driven upwards by steadily increasing food prices, the state-run ZIANA news agency reported today.

The latest figure, which is for the month of February, marks an increase of 12.8 percentage points over January's inflation figure of 208.1 per cent.

Analysts interviewed by ZIANA said the inflation figure was likely to increase further in April when recent increases in fuel prices are factored in.

Last month the government hiked the price of aviation fuel, petrol and diesel.

The government has imposed blanket price controls on both basic and luxury goods in an attempt to cushion the blow to consumers who have seen the purchasing power of the Zimbabwe dollar eroded to one percent of its 1990 value.

However the controls have resulted in a thriving black market, and ordinary Zimbabweans are forced to queue for hours for basics like bread, cooking oil and sugar.
