A chara, – Tim Cullinan suggests that farmers will do their “fair share” to reduce emissions (Opinion & Analysis, July 11th). Agriculture produces almost 40 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions in Ireland, and is being asked to reduce emissions by only 30 per cent by 2030. If they refuse to do even that much, it means other sectors must do a lot more.
Cutting transport emissions by more than 50 per cent would mean a drastic and immediate cut in the number of private car journeys taken. Cutting emissions from power generation by more than 80 per cent would require closing fossil fuel plants tomorrow.
