Television licence

Sir, – Laura Slattery is understandably sceptical about the suggestion that we might see any action in overhauling collection of the television licence fee (“Future of Media Commission response a muted sequel to an already overfamiliar story”, Analysis, July 13th).

She writes that measures to tackle evasion would deliver limited returns. The latest report (of many) suggests that the prospect of legal enforcement would risk “the spectre of increased public opposition”.

One assumes this opposition would come from those who for years have been the evaders and not from those who pay. If that is the case, the so-called spectre is that people who refuse to pay would oppose any suggestion that they be forced to pay. That sounds right.

Meantime, in this other world, the majority pay for themselves and for those who prefer to watch for free.
