Sir, – CSO statistics state that 57 per cent of short journeys in Ireland in 2019 were undertaken by car. A short journey is 2km or less. Given it takes less than 10 mins to cycle 2km, or about 20 minutes to walk, perhaps those of us who are physically capable of doing so could leave their car at home?
This would save money, reduce pollution, mitigate climate change, reduce obesity and ill-health, and would also reduce the amount of public space being clogged up by private unsustainable transport. A reduction in the number of cars on roads would also lead to a reduction in road deaths, something rarely mentioned in discussions regarding road safety in the media. – Yours, etc,
LYNN McMAHON,
