Sir, – Pat O’Brien’s letter published on August 13th expressed his bafflement as to why his electricity bill’s standing charge increased exactly in line with the unit rate charged for electricity earlier this year. When negotiating my renewal in July with supplier Bord Gáis Energy, I queried why the standing charge had increased by exactly the same rate (28 per cent) as the electricity unit rate in April. Its representative could not explain the reason behind this so I queried the matter when filling in BGE’s online “How did we do?” survey a few days later. I haven’t yet had a response and I don’t expect one.
Pat O’Brien is correct when he writes that something else is going on here. – Yours, etc,
