Sir, – Pavel Marianski states that we should reduce our dependence on Chinese-made goods so that we don’t end up like Germany, overly reliant on an unreliable supplier (Letters, August 18th).
That is one good reason; another good reason is that by purchasing as much as we do from China, and by we I mean the West, we are funding and enabling a repressive regime which clearly is in expansionist mode. All of the military equipment, the overseas bases, the threatening manoeuvres against Taiwan, are all being contributed to by us. Every time we buy all those Chinese-made gadgets we never give a second thought to, we are directly contributing to the Chinese government exchequer.
It is time we in the West examined our purchasing decisions, and if enough of us stop buying Chinese made goods, it might cause them to rethink their own behaviour. And even if they don’t, at least we can take some comfort from not contributing to it. – Yours, etc,
