Climate crisis and systemic changes

We need clarity on what is required

Sir, – There is a lack of clarity of the specific systemic changes that will occur in all sectors of society and economy to meet climate targets – that lack of clarity renders the chances of halving climate emissions in the narrow window of eight years a pipedream. Emphasising what we can done at an individual level deflects attention from systemic change. Ask your average citizen what they do to stop global warming and they will say, “Go vegetarian”, or “Turn off the lights”, long before they talk about lobbying their elected officials. It is time to take the emphasis off personal choice as we develop clear-cut plans for systemic change in all sectors to move away from fossil fuels, maximise active travel and public transport, and transform the housing stock and agricultural systems, as we doggedly challenge the alternative that is climate breakdown and ecosystem collapse. – Yours, etc,
