Hapless males in advertisements

Time to ditch the stereotypes

Sir, – We hear a lot about woman’s rights, the ongoing successful drive for equality and creating a “can do” climate for young women.

It seems to me that it’s important to be aware of the bigger picture and part of that picture is that we have a sector in our society of young males with fragile mental health and self-esteem issues, who can be impacted by, to give just one example, media advertisements where it has become fashionable for the male to look foolish and the female to appear the smart one. Reverse the roles and there would be a outcry of “sexism”.

It seems to me that it is important to be aware of the need for equality and inclusion and to be mindful that all our young people need to grow up with a healthy sense of self. – Yours, etc,

MARY DALY,
