Sir, – John Ryan (Letters, August 13th) makes a number of good points about the advantages of smart meters.
A wealth of information about the smart metering rollout programme and its benefits are available on our website at esbnetworks.ie/smartmeter, including the rollout timeline and a map with the locations we are working in. Individual customers can register with ESB Networks or their supplier for an early meter installation if they wish.
To date over 900,000 meters have been installed in customers’ homes and businesses across Ireland.
The programme aims to upgrade 2.4 million meters by the end of 2024, delivering benefits to customers, the economy and the environment. Smart meters facilitate new services, including a day, night, peak standard smart tariff, which all electricity supply companies now offer. Customers who avail of these services can achieve greater, more efficient control over their electricity consumption. Information provided by these services allow customers to make best use of their appliances by moving some of their consumption to times of the day when electricity is cheaper.
Ann Ingle: Deliberately going out of my way to move for no particular reason has never appealed to me
Gerry Thornley: How about an alternative look at Ireland’s Six Nations win over England?
Is Ireland anti-Semitic, an outlier of tolerance or in the middle ground?
How risky is it to buy a second-hand EV?
This is an ambitious programme which represents a step change in how individual customers and businesses can manage their energy more efficiently while impacting positively on the environment. – Yours, etc,
CARMEL O’CONNOR
