A feast of football and hurling

Support your local club

Sir, – In response to J Anthony Gaughan’s letter (August 25th), neither football nor hurling have gone away.

Club championships are in full swing around the country in both codes and at various levels.

Without the thousands of players who compete at club level, there would be no feeder system to provide players for the handful of inter-county games involving a few hundred players who would still, under the old inter-county calendar, be competing at this time of year.

These club players put in a huge commitment in terms of time and effort and deserve to play their games in decent conditions. Some games are broadcast live and in the case of Dublin are free to view.

It is of course better to go and support your local club where you will have a good chance to see inter-county players in action as well as stars of the past and future.

There were over 60 adult games in Dublin alone at the weekend to choose from.

We should at least wait until the end of the club championship before jumping to any conclusions. – Yours, etc,

JOHN GLEESON,

Terenure,

Dublin 6W.
