Sir, – In your editorial “The Irish Times view on EU reform: new German ideas – at last” (August 31st), you praise various ideas put forward by German chancellor Olaf Scholz. However, in his Prague speech he also suggested that majority voting be established for both EU foreign and tax policies. The latter in particular represents a very clear threat to Ireland’s economic model which has been so successful over the past 30 years since the inception of the IFSC. The UK, were it still in the EU, would have no doubt blocked any such action but with its departure Ireland is now friendless when it comes to potential tax harmonisation. Be careful what you wish for. – Yours, etc,
JOHN TURNER,
