Sir, – In calling for the introduction of a €9 monthly public transport fare, Labour Party leader Ivana Bacik (Letters, September 14th) refers to the “successful’' introduction of a similar scheme in Germany. However, she neglects to mention the fact that the €9 monthly fare that Germany introduced was a three-month pilot scheme; the project ended on August 31st.
While the innovative experiment went down a treat with Germany’s travelling public, the cost to the state (some €2.5 billion) was deemed to be too prohibitive for the enterprise to become permanent. – Yours, etc,
