Cycling through the graveyard

Disrupting a sacred space

Sir, – I am at a loss to understand how a plan that allows a cycle path through Deansgrange graveyard can even be in consideration. A graveyard is by default a space to stop, think, remember and pray for family members who have gone before us. Common decency dictates when visiting, we switch off or silence our phones, we speak quietly, we don’t run, we drive cars slowly and with an abundance of care, and we are respectful of the privacy of others. When visiting a grave it is a time to forget the pressures of daily life, slow down, think, and give a moment for our dear departed ones. A quiet space, a place of contemplation. How can this be compatible with cycling and e-scooting commuters who will be travelling at speed and disrupting this sacred space? – Yours, etc,
