Sir, – There has been discussion in your letters column (September 19th and 20th) regarding the old chestnut of Ireland rejoining the British Commonwealth. A lot of the existing members are complete strangers to democracy. A vast number criminalise their LGBT communities and are a more than a bit iffy on human rights generally.
Added to this, some of the more respectable members look like they might seize on the death of the Queen Elizabeth to jump ship.
So why on earth would we hitch our wagon to this motley crew just to placate a minority on this island still wedded to a long-dead empire? – Yours, etc,
