Sir, – The crowds who lustily sang “Ooh ahh, Paul McGrath” at Lansdowne Road in the glory days of Jack Charlton’s reign may be surprised to have discovered recently that their efforts were a futile waste of breath.
We now learn from your poll (“Irish Times/Ipsos poll indicates most people do not believe ‘Up the ‘Ra’ chants glorify IRA”, October 29th) that doing so indicated no support for or “glorification” of Ireland’s magnificent centre-back and occasional midfielder – in the same way that singing “Ooh ahh, up the ‘Ra” apparently doesn’t indicate any tacit approval of or support for the Provisional IRA.
– Yours, etc
