Sir, – I refer to the article: “Bishop apologises over controversial remarks by priest at Listowel Mass” (News, November 1st). I would like to know why the Bishop of Kerry Dr Ray Browne is apologising? Is it because the remarks [by Fr Seán Sheehy] were inappropriate in the context of a homily at Sunday Mass? Is it because there was reference to sex when there were children present? Is it because it was transmitted online?
The Bishop, who holds a Bachelor of Divinity and holds the equivalent to a Master’s degree in Canon Law says that the homily doesn’t represent what he refers to as “Christian views”.
I suggest that he return to his studies where he will find that the notion that sex between two men and sex between two women being a sin is very much in line with Catholic teaching – more’s the pity.
The same church opposes contraception, opposed the majority side in the most recent abortion referendum and was either antagonistic or silent on the marriage referendum, depending on which parish you attended Mass.

A chara, – It was with horror and disappointment that I read the comments made by a priest in Listowel over the weekend.
As the father of a gay son and a retired school principal, I am very aware of how homophobic comments can be used to bully and undermine young boys and girls in this country.
For a member of the clergy to use the power of the pulpit to add fuel to this already blazing fire astounds and angers this grandfather.
I commend the members of the congregation who voted with their feet and got up and left.
I also commend Bishop Ray Browne for his very helpful comments on the issue.

Sir, – I am struggling to make sense of the controversy surrounding the homily delivered in Listowel, and the ensuing backlash from his parishioners.
What could be possibly controversial about the homily of a Roman Catholic Mass accurately reflecting of the views of the Roman Catholic Church?
