Foxes, cars and hares on Bull Island

Dogs are not the problem

Sir, – Two of your recent correspondents have attributed the loss of the hare population on Bull Island in Dublin to dogs. This is not correct. The decline and ultimate loss of the population was due to the causeway. This gave the foxes from St Anne’s Park easy access to a new food supply.

I believe the golf clubs on the island have tried a number of times in the past to re-introduce the hare without success. The golf courses are fenced off from dogs, but not foxes. After a lifetime running on Bull Island and now walking it, my observation would be that the vast majority of dog owners have their pets under control.

I would agree with the suggestions that due to its status the island should have full-time resources on-site managing it and traffic flow.
