Sir, – I share Conall Doran’s (Letters, November 4th) concern regarding the potential impact of a diaspora vote on fiscal policy for the State. However the Seanad offers a ready-made answer to the question of how Irish citizens abroad can vote.
As the Seanad has no power to block money bills from Dáil Éireann, allowing the Irish abroad to vote for a dedicated emigrant panel of senators would give the diaspora a significant voice in the Oireachtas whilst not impacting on fiscal policy.
In other words, a “win-win” for everyone.
