Sir, – Every morning and evening, RTÉ broadcasts a series of slots called “traffic and travel” on their programmes. It could probably repeat the same clip every day as we are well aware that Dunkettle, Portobello, the M50 and Bóthar na dTreabh are always clogged with traffic. Private car traffic is dynamic, with bottlenecks appearing and disappearing rapidly, rendering these reports quite irrelevant.
Although RTÉ includes “travel” in the package title, it provides no information for those who choose other, more sustainable modes of travel.
Why not list the many broken lifts at railway and tram stops, which have far greater consequences on the travel plans of those who rely on them throughout the day? Why not detail any delays to bus services, including those “vanishing” buses we read about (Weekend Review, Saturday 5th) where each missing bus can delay up to 90 people?
Problems with Luas and Dart services will impact a significant number of commuters, but rarely get mentioned.
An Irish businessman in Singapore: ‘You’ll get a year in jail if you are in a drunken brawl, so people don’t step out of line’
Protestants in Ireland: ‘We’ve gone after the young generations. We’ve listened and changed how we do things’
Is this the final chapter for Books at One as Dublin and Cork shops close?
In Dallas, X marks the mundane spot that became an inflection point of US history
By revising these slots, RTÉ could provide a really valuable service to all travellers. – Yours, etc,
