Sir, – As I go about my daily life, enjoying the sounds of life around me, the breeze in the trees, the songs of the birds, I always feel that those around me with their earphones in their ears are missing out on so much.

Hilary Fannin’s piece (“My layer of self-protection has been sandblasted away”, Life, November 12th) illustrated brilliantly just how much the earphones brigade are missing. – Yours, etc,
