Sir, – It is welcome news indeed that the FBI is to investigate the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, the esteemed and long-serving Palestinian journalist.
It is not at all surprising that the Israeli government has made it clear that they will not cooperate with this investigation, stating it stands by the soldiers who shot her. This is despite being an ally of the United States and hugely funded by them.
We should remember that the Israeli defence forces at the time falsely claimed that Shireen was shot (in the head) by a Palestinian, before objective investigations showed there was no such gunfire at the time. They belatedly admitted they had shot Shireen, while claiming it was “mistakenly”.
Mark Weiss (“Israel refuses to co-operate with US inquiry into journalist’s killing”, November 16th) states, “But her family, as well as much of the Palestinian community, still blame Israeli forces for deliberating targeting the veteran and highly respected journalist”.
