Voting rights and the diaspora

We have a problem

Sir, – When President Higgins signs an Act into law, that law applies to everyone resident in or visiting Ireland and to nobody outside the country.

As a British citizen permanently resident in the State, I am subject to those laws but don’t get to vote for the President.

I have no problem with that.

We are now told the Government wants to extend the vote for the presidency to right-wing Irish Americans who may never visit this country or be subject to its laws (“Civic forum to be held on diaspora vote”, news 21st November).
