Sir, – While I agree that the variety of wine that was available in our supermarkets in the 1980s was indeed poor, it was by no means compulsory to have to drink Black Tower, Blue Nun or Le Piat D’Or, although I often did because that was all that was in someone’s fridge.
However, chilling red wine in the fridge is not as shocking as a letter writer thinks it is (November 29th). This is because young, light red wines such as those from the Beaujolais or Valpolicella regions, or wines made from Gamay or Pinot Noir grapes, are actually best served slightly chilled. But of course, we wouldn’t have known that back then. – Yours, etc,
