Sir, – Rory Fitzgerald’s sensible proposal (Letters, December 16th) to allow dwelling units to be built in suitably sized gardens with an exemption from planning permission is very similar to the project we have submitted to the Housing Unlocked exhibition, organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation and currently running in the Science Gallery in Trinity College Dublin.
Our proposal, Start Spreading the Mews, identifies the potential for mews houses to rapidly provide accommodation for up to 50,000 people within the M50, on the 64km of laneways accessing rear gardens we have identified.
The proposal seeks to tackle both the housing crisis and the climate crisis, by adding residential density to existing sought-after areas near public transport infrastructure.
We would encourage anyone interested in radical ideas to solve the housing crisis to visit the Housing Unlocked exhibition, which runs to February 17th. – Yours, etc,
