There is a place for ivy in the broader scheme of things

Live and let leaf

Sir, – Further to a recent letter writer (December 24th) lamenting the presence of ivy growing on trees, when he would prefer to admire the architecture of the bare trees, can I remind him and us all of the vital importance of ivy in supporting biodiversity? The National Biodiversity Data Centre’s All Ireland Pollinator Plan (pollinators.ie) advises that ivy is a vital resource for wildlife, especially in winter time. How can we move from viewing our environment solely from a human-dominant perspective to incorporate a holistic, nature-based philosophy? – Yours, etc,

MIRIAM MOONEY,
