Democratic Republic of Congo

Global greed

Sir, – You state that vast rainforests are plundered for gold, cobalt and other resources (“The Irish Times view on the Pope’s visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo”, February 3rd).

Though rebel groups are involved, it is first-world mining companies that extract these minerals. Most are tax resident in other countries, including Ireland, where scrutiny is minimal. Some of the responsibility for African woes lies in our own facilitation of global greed. – Yours, etc,

PAUL CONNOLLY,

Cavan.
