Sir, – I congratulate Kevin McLoughlin for his perseverance with golf (Letters, March 27th). I am particularly impressed in light of my own experience of the game. I struggled with this alleged sport for many years.
While consistently underperforming, I met many a kind golfer along the way on a regular basis. I noted their struggle to find for a comforting phrase and ease my embarrassment. “You’ve got potential,” they would say. I so wanted to believe them but even I could spot the lack of conviction. I did the only sensible thing and threw in the towel. – Yours, etc,
