Life before mobile phones

Getting the coins ready

Sir, – Reading Conor Pope’s article brought back warm memories of the 1960s (“20 things killed by our phones in 20 years”, Pricewatch, April 10th). My beloved was working in London and I was studying in Dublin. Having amassed the necessary coins for the public phone and having dialled and pushed button A, the desired connection was made. It was close to midnight and when the operator told me I had only a minute left, I promptly burst into tears. He interjected with the words: “Okay, I’ll give you a few more minutes.” Ah, those were the days! – Yours, etc,
