Sir, – It is difficult to disagree with Emer McLysaght on the horrific aspect of Easter. (“A man is whipped, beaten and crucified. Is this really suitable content for children?”, April 7th)
For local, national and international tragedies, we are told to discuss and answer questions that children may have in an age appropriate manner.
However on an annual basis over 40 days it is acceptable to describe in intimate detail the torture and murder of a man, to children as young as four, as part of the school curriculum simply because he was the founder of Christianity. Not to mention the further emphasis that that this terrible death was for them. The excuse is given that the teaching material “usually goes over their heads” in the infant classes.
Where’s the safety and respect in that? – Yours, etc.
