Sir, – I can’t believe it. The French air traffic controllers are still at it (“Flight disruption possible for Irish passengers amid French air traffic control dispute”, News, June 5th). In 1963, 60 years ago, I was going to France as an au pair for the summer but the flight was cancelled due to an air traffic controllers strike.
The problems as a consequence were difficult, to say the least.
I had to go into a bookshop to find a French dictionary as I didn’t know the French word for “strike”. Then off to a post office to send a telegram to my host, who had to change my overnight accommodation, and telegraph me to give me the updated information.
I’m still resentful of the French air traffic controllers! – Yours, etc,

‘I could have gone to California. At this rate, I probably would have raised about half a billion dollars’
