Sir, – Reducing speed limits on our road network may well help in a significant reduction in road deaths and serious injuries and would be welcomed (“Number of people suffering serious injuries in road crashes almost triples in a decade”, News, June 8th). But across the board reductions, particularly on our rural roads, is not the best way to approach the problem. Some of our rural roads are far more dangerous than others and as such should have reduced limits rather than having the uniform limit. In addition, the poor standard of our road surfaces, combined with overgrown hedges often blocking road signs, are a huge contribution to accidents and need to be addressed vigorously to reduce the possibility of the causes of serious crashes. – Yours, etc,
AUSTIN SAVAGE,
Dún Laoghaire,
