Poverty and deprivation

Sir, – While many of the recent indicators as part of Measuring Ireland’s Progress (MIP) are positive and, therefore, to be welcomed (“The Irish Times view on Ireland in data: economic progress but social deficits”, August 11th), I would like to draw attention to some other recent data from the Central Statistics Office: “17.7 per cent of people were experiencing deprivation in 2022. This compares with 13.8 per cent in 2021. The deprivation rate for those at risk of poverty was 40.7 per cent in the CSO Survey in Income and Living Conditions 2022 compared with 34.1 per cent in 2021. The deprivation rate for those not at risk of poverty was 14.3 per cent in 2022, compared with 11.2 per cent in 2021.”

I wonder do we have an acceptable level of poverty and deprivation? – Yours, etc,
