Retesting drivers

Motivation to comply with the rules of the road

A chara, – In relation to recent Government announcements regarding the reductions in speed limits, it strikes me as odd that driver retesting is never given any consideration. I would propose that on top of any financial penalty, anyone receiving six penalty points (for all infractions, speeding or otherwise) in a two-year period be required to at least resit a driver theory test, and anyone receiving over six penalty points be required to resit the full driving test. I would be of the opinion that the potential to resit the driving test would be a significantly stronger motivation to comply with the rules of the road and protect others than the financial penalties that currently apply to any infractions. There is also the option of placing anyone who needs to resit a full test on a more limited license, with temporary restrictions imposed until they have successfully passed the driver retest. A car or similar is a dangerous vehicle if not driven correctly, and anyone amassing penalty points could be considered to not be fully capable of controlling a vehicle and would therefore need to be retested. – Is mise,
