VAR technology is not the issue

A breakdown in communication

Sir, – The video assistant referee (VAR) transcript in the Sports Wednesday section (“‘Wait, wait, wait, wait’ – audio of VAR mistake in Liverpool defeat at Tottenham”, Sport, News, October 4th) was most illuminating.

The inability of the VAR officials involved to construct a clear, grammatical sentence led to inevitable confusion, and ultimately to an incorrect decision. The contrast with the considered communication which occurs between professional rugby referees and the “television match official” (TMO) when required during a game is striking. VAR technology is not the issue. Poor communication from those charged with implementing VAR’s processes is the root cause to be remedied. Let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater! – Yours, etc,
