Sir, – I have completed the Dublin marathon a few times on the current route. Every time, I’ve pondered why I am running through places that could never even dream of coming within an ass’s roar of meriting even a footnote in a tourist guide to Dublin. For once, can we also have a running event that does not include the banality of the Phoenix Park, please? Make Dublin’s coastline a large part of the route instead and take runners away from the main arterial transport routes to the city centre. Why the event needs to start and finish in pretty much the same place every year beats me. Other marathons are not run this way. – Yours, etc,
