Smartphones and young children

Regulation

Sir, – I would like to thank Jade Wilson for her article on smartphones in schools (“Parents to be encouraged not to buy smartphones for primary school children”, News, November 7th). Is it simplistic of me to wonder why any guidance is necessary at all? We ban the sale of alcohol to underage children, as we regulate the age of marriage, driving, application for change of address in the post office, passports, the sale of cigarettes and a host of other things, small or big. Why not smartphones? – Yours, etc,
