Sir, – I am one of many thousands of parents that have chosen to send my children to private school – not because we could afford it but because we thought it was worth it.
Many parents are “middle class” at best who chose to spend a high proportion of their hard-earned money on the education of their children. This could be as high as 50 per cent of their total take home pay or more. They are inside no “tent”. They are not rich. They have made a choice to give their children the best opportunity they can at considerable cost proportionally to them.
Jennifer O’Connell is correct when she writes: “Who really runs Ireland? Rich daddies and mammies and their children” (“Ireland is hostage to Rich Daddy Syndrome”, Opinion, December 16th). This is the same all over the world, but this is a different point entirely to choosing private education for your children. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Jennifer O’Connell is taking aim at the wrong people (Opinion, December 16th).
Mummies and daddies the world over will always try to help their children. The problem in this country is that there isn’t enough affordable housing available particularly for young families. Ms O’Connell should be taking aim at our policy makers and planners. – Yours, etc,
