Sir, – You published the trend in road deaths, which tragically are on the rise, in “Number of Garda roads officers fell as deaths rose in 2023? (News, January 2nd). You also noted the reduced Garda traffic presence on the roads. The implication is that one causes the other. However, there was no mention of traffic volume trends, which are surely on the rise since the pandemic, as, I suspect, is the driving population. Every road death is one too many, but it’s also important to have a correct analysis of the problem. – Yours, etc,
