Sir, – Your editorial “The Irish Times view on the Gaza conflict: Israel’s war takes on a new dynamic” (January 4th) correctly observes that Israel’s drone strike on Tuesday on the Beirut offices of Hamas is a dangerous development and could help to “ignite a wider regional conflagration”.
It should also be noted that such an attack with high explosives in the capital city of a sovereign neighbouring state, irrespective of the target, also highlights Israel’s utter disregard for international law. What next? Bombings and shootings in Doha and Cairo?
Sadly, the world has come to expect no less from Israel and it is highly unlikely that the US will object and intervene. It seems that international law is for other people and Israel can act with impunity against Palestinians. – Yours, etc,
