Work permits

Workers need clarity

Sir, – I am writing to express my concern regarding the recent announcement about the increase in the minimum salary for new general employment permits (“New permit pay requirements a post-Christmas headache for many employers, says consultant”, News, December 29th).

As an existing permit holder, I am deeply worried about the implications of this new requirement on my future in Ireland. I understand that the new minimum salary has been set at €39,000, which is a significant increase from the previous amount.

I am currently uncertain if my employer will be able to accommodate this increase before January 2025.

Ireland is a country I have come to love dearly, and the thought of potentially having to leave due to not meeting the new salary threshold is disheartening.

I have been a diligent worker, contributing to the Irish economy, and I truly wish to continue my life and career here.

The announcement has left me with a crucial question.

Will this change apply to existing permit holders when they apply for permit renewal after 2025? I believe this is a concern shared by many other permit holders and would appreciate any clarification the Government could provide on this matter.

I understand the need for such changes and respect the government’s decision. However, I kindly request the Government to consider the implications on existing permit holders who may find it challenging to meet the new salary requirement and to provide us with clear information to plan our future accordingly. – Yours, etc,
